Accu-Wedge Direct Mount on the Band Saw Table
In this video we mounted the Accu-Slice rail directly to the miter bar slot on the band saw using custom machined miter bar inserts, attached the Accu-Wedge and then sliced segmented wedges to produce two segmented discs. Alternatively, two holes can be drilled and tapped into the band saw table to mount the rail to the band saw table. The Accu-Wedge then rides on this mounted rail. This will be a new product in the near future. I need to redesign the dust shield for the Accu-Wedge and I will also need to design and machine miter bar inserts. Expect this product to be available by February 15, 2022. |

Accu-Wedge - Segmenting Accessory
The Accu-Wedge system must be used with one of the following accessories (not included in the Accu-Wedge Package). The Accu-Wedge requires the use of the Accu-Slice rail.
The Accu-Wedge is an accessory carriage for the precise cutting of the wedges for segmented wood turning on the band saw. By cutting these segmented wedges on the band saw, much less wood is wasted (as compared to a table saw) due to the narrow kerf of the band saw blade. In addition, cutting these wedges on the band saw is much safer than cutting them on the table saw.
The Accu-Wedge system must be used with one of the following accessories (not included in the Accu-Wedge Package). The Accu-Wedge requires the use of the Accu-Slice rail.
- The Accu-Slice System consisting of the Accu-Slice Index table and a 36" rail
- The Accu-Wedge Band Saw Mounting Plate Kit which includes the rail (described below)
- This is a less expensive option which enables the Accu-Wedge to be mounted directly on the band saw table without using the Accu-Slice system.

In addition, cutting these wedges on the band saw is much safer than cutting them on the table saw.
The Accu-Wedge System used with the Accu-Slice Index Table
The Accu-Wedge is operated in conjunction with the Accu-Slice band saw accessory rail and carriage system with roller bearing slides. The Accu-Wedge Auto-Indexing Table is constructed from a 9.5" wide by 15" long and 5/16" thick hard coat anodized aluminum plate with four roller bearings mounted on its base. These roller bearings slide effortlessly on the Accu-Slice rail to provide for smooth and accurate cuts on the band saw to produce precision segmented rings with no gaps or spaces between the wedges in the rings. The all-metal construction of the Accu-Wedge provides for a quality system that is sturdy, versatile, and highly accurate. |
The Accu-Wedge has two independent pivoting aluminum fences with the ability to set an accurate angle between the two fences. A similar technique has been used with wedges on a table saw in the past. However with the Accu-Wedge there is no need for the wedges or angles. The angle for the two fences is set with an auto-indexing system that locks the fences in place with pins and locking indents which have been precision machined into the Accu-Wedge table with an accuracy of better than 0.1 degrees. There are a total of 17 possible segments per ring combinations from 4 to 72 segments per ring that have been auto indexed into the table including the odd segments 5, 7 and 9.

Auto-Index Table Positions - Cutting a wood segment on the Accu-Wedge
A channel slot has been machined into the top of each of the fences to enable the attachment of accessory clamps to securely hold the wood when cutting the segments.. This will provide for the optimum accuracy of the joints in your segmented rings
The Diversion Ramp with Magnets and 2 Clamps are included with the Accu-Wedge System
The Accu-Wedge system as shown includes the Accu-Wedge Auto-Index Table, two fences with channel slots, two clamps and a dust shield attached to the bottom of the auto-index table to protect the roller bearings from becoming clogged with saw dust. Also included is an Aluminum Diversion Ramp with magnets to hold it to the band saw table. This ramp enables the cut wedges of wood to slide away from the band saw blade after cutting so that they do not get caught up in the blade teeth.
NEW - Accu-Wedge Ramp - 3-D PLA Printed Upgrade Ramp - Part Number: AS-RAMP
This is a new upgrade to the Ramp for the Accu-Wedge System. This new Accu-Wedge Ramp eliminates some of the issues that we encountered with the standard flexible aluminum ramp. The design, installation and operation of this new Accu-Wedge Ramp in described in the YouTube video listed on the right. The ramp was designed using the Fusion 360 software and was printed using a new 3-D Printer recently added to the shops at Accu-Slice. The main features of this new Accu-Wedge Ramp include the following:

NEW - Accu-Wedge Secondary Dust Shields
for use with the Accu-Wedge System mounted on the Accu-Slice Index Table
for use with the Accu-Wedge System mounted on the Accu-Slice Index Table
Two sizes of the Secondary Dust Shield are now available:
These are the new secondary or additional Dust Shields that are used with the Accu-Wedge system mounted on the Accu-Slice Index Table. The purpose of this secondary dust shield is to minimize the amount of saw dust that accumulates on the roller bearings on the Accu-Wedge table. Thereby reducing the need to frequently clean these roller bearings. This Secondary Dust Shield was designed using the Fusion 360 software and printed out using the Bambu 3D printer. It contains 3 small magnets which hold the dust shield to the band saw table. The Dust Shield is 11 inches long by 1.8" x 2.25". It was 3-D Printed using PLA Plastic and contains 3 small magnets. This new dust shield worked quite well to minimize saw dust from reaching the roller bearings on the Accu-Wedge table. This will reduce the need to frequently clean the roller bearings. We now offer two lengths of the Secondary Dust Shields. Both will help protect your roller bearings from saw dust accumulation. Due to its longer length, the 16" long version will better protect the roller bearings, The YouTube videos listed on the right describes the design, development and testing of this new Secondary Dust Shield and the introduction of the new 16" long version of the Secondary Dust Shield. |

Accu-Wedge Band Saw Mounting Plate Kits
We have had many requests to use the Accu-Wedge system without the need for the Accu-Slice Index table and rail, due to the cost of the Accu-Slice system. As a result of these requests, we developed the "Accu-Wedge Band Saw Mounting Plate Kit" which enables the Accu-Wedge to be mounted directly onto the band saw table. This new accessory mounting system for the Accu-Wedge is described in the YouTube Video on the right: This kit does not include the Accu-Wedge system - it must be purchased separately as described above. The mounting plate is designed to fit a variety of band saws with 3/4" wide T-Slot miter bar slots. It has a series of holes drilled into the plate to fit band saws with the distance between the band saw blade and the miter bar slot between 3.25" and 6.25". The standard plate has holes drilled into the plate with this distance between the band saw blade and the miter bar slot is 3.25", 3.5", 4.5" and 6.25". Other distances are available on special request. The dust shield is included. The Accu-Wedge already has a dust shield, but by adding this additional dust shield, sawdust accumulation on the Accu-Wedge roller bearings is drastically reduced or even eliminated. Two models of the Accu-Wedge Mounting Plate Kit are available depending on the shape of the miter bar slot groove on your band saw and weather the miter bar slot has T-slot grooves. ___________________________________________________________________ AS100MP - For Band Saws with T-Slot Miter Bar Slots. The miter bar slot on the band saw must be 3/4" (0.75") wide and must be of the T-Slot configuration. This kit includes two T-Slot miter bar inserts that enables this system to be locked in place on the band saw table. A series of three tapped holes in these inserts enables the Accu-Wedge system to be adjusted up to 0.100" closer or further away from the band saw blade. This Accu-Wedge Band Saw Mounting Plate Kit with Miter Bar T-Slot Inserts consists of three components:
AS100MP2 - For Band Saws without T-Slot Miter Bar Slots - Standard Rectangular Shaped Miter Bar Slot. This kit is for band saws that do not have T-slot inserts in the Miter Bar. The miter bar slot on the band saw must be 3/4" (0.75") wide x 3/8" deep. This kit includes a miter bar (12" long x 3/4" wide x 3/8" deep) with two offset cam locks that enables this system to be locked in place on the band saw table. This is the same locking system that we use on our Accu-Slice system. The miter bar contains two 1/4" x 20 tpi threaded holes for the attachment of the mounting plate to your band saw. This Accu-Wedge Band Saw Mounting Plate Kit with Miter bar with Off-Set Cam Locks consists of three components:

It is recommended that the Accu-Stop accessory be used with the Accu-Wedge. The Accu-Stop is not included with the basic system. The Accu-Stop is used to set the length of the segment wedges for segmented woodturning. The Accu-Stop attaches to the band saw table with a MagJig clamp for easy positioning, and it incorporates a fine tread adjusting screw that can be finely adjusted and then locked in position with the thumbscrew.
Another valuable accessory is the Accu-Path Band Saw Laser. The laser beam projects a red laser line to project the path of the band saw blade. Additional Clamps are are also available. |

Accu-Wedge Steps for Perfect Wedges
- Use a ¾” wide band saw blade with 14 teeth per inch (tpi)
- Square Band Saw Table so that the band saw blade is perfectly perpendicular to the Accu-Wedge Table
- Set both fences on the Accu-Wedge to the same number
- Make sure your board is straight with parallel sides
- Mark a line down the length of the board slightly off center
- Always use clamps to hold the board against the fences
- Make sure the board is flat against the fence and clamp in place
- Use both fences, switching back and forth
- Do not rotate the board – always keep the line facing up
- Use the Accu-Stop to set the length of the Wedges, clamp in place
- Make sure that the face on the Accu-Stop is parallel to the Accu-Wedge Table
- After making the first cut, position the end of the board in the middle of the Accu-Stop face
- Cut Slowly – the Slower you cut – the smoother the cut
- Lightly sand the tip of the cut to eliminate any fuzzies before making the next wedge so that the tip will position correctly of the Accu-Stop face
- After slicing all the wedges, lightly sand the burr off the one face and lightly sand off the fuzzies on the bottom face of the wedge
- Assemble all the wedges, with the line facing up with alternating offset lines
- Use a rubber band to hold the wedges in place and check for any gaps
- Minor gaps can be corrected by re-sanding the wedge faces and applying additional pressure on the edge that is need material removed
The following videos describe these steps for creating Perfect Segmented Wedges.

Accu-Wedge - Select the Right Band Saw Blade for Optimum Performance
For the optimum performance of the Accu-Wedge on the band saw we recommend using ¾” wide by 14 teeth-per inch (tpi) band saw blades.
These wider and thicker blades will enable the accurate cutting of the wedges with perfect fitting joints with no gaps. The fine 14 tpi blades provide for the smooth cuts on the cross grain edges of the wood segments.
When using the standard ½” wide blades, we have noticed some minor blade drift as you cut across the wood pieces at an oblique angle. These ½” blades work fine on the Accu-Slice system with no blade drift when cutting parallel or at 90 degrees to the wood grain. However when cutting at an angle between 20 and 70 degrees across the wood grain, the wood grain tends to pull the blade ever so slightly to one side. Increasing the band saw blade tension can help minimize this problem but the increased blade tension may cause the blades to break prematurely at the weld joints.
Therefore we recommend using the ¾” wide band saw blades with the Accu-Wedge to eliminate this blade drift problem and enable the production of perfect segmented rings on the band saw. The ¾” wide x 14 tpi blades are available from the Timber Wolf Band Saw Blade Company.
This is demonstrated in our video on Band Saw Blades for the Accu-Wedge.
Two styles of blades are available - both wood and metal cutting blades. We have used both with the Accu-Wedge. We have obtained excellent results when using the metal cutting blades. Even though this blade is listed as a metal cutting blade, they cut accurately for cross cutting applications on wood and cutting the segment wedges with the Accu-Wedge and Accu-Slice Systems.
